PRESIDENT OBAMA & ADMINISTRATION: The Hill's Amie Parnes and Niall Stanage: " Done with fundraising, President Obama hits the homestretch" President Obama will attend his last fundraiser of the 2012 campaign Thursday and then shift into top gear following his disastrous recent debate performance that vaporized his polling lead over challenger Mitt Romney. With momentum in the race flipping to the Republican, sources have told The Hill the president will spend the rest of the campaign at swing-state rallies or preparing for the next two debates instead of attending more private fundraisers. The Los Angeles Times' Michael Memoli and Maeve Reston: " Obama campaigns more urgently in response to debate setback" His tepid debate performance has turned a September surge into an October swoon, and President Obama has traded his campaign swagger for a more urgent posture, insisting to supporters that he will finish strong and calling on them to step up as well. After a weekend trip heavy with fundraising stops, Obama returned to more traditional campaigning Tuesday in Ohio, the state that his team has long viewed as a potential bulwark against Mitt Romney. It was his 30th trip there since taking office and the 15th in 2012. LINK

The New York Times': Michael R. Gordon Elizabeth Bumiller:" U.S. Military Is Sent to Jordan to Help With Crisis in Syria" The United States military has secretly sent a task force of more than 150 planners and other specialists to Jordan to help the armed forces there handle a flood of Syrian refugees, prepare for the possibility that Syria will lose control of its chemical weapons and be positioned should the turmoil in Syria expand into a wider conflict. MITT ROMNEY: ABC News' Z. Byron Wolf: " Romney Appears to Shift to Center on Abortion Legislation Plans" Democrats and abortion rights activists have seized on Mitt Romney's recent comment to the Des Moines Register that he would not pursue any new restrictions on abortion rights as president, an apparent change from what he has said earlier in the campaign and during the Republican presidential primaries. "There's no legislation with regards to abortion that I'm familiar with that would become part of my agenda," Romney said, according to the paper. LINK

The Washington Times' Seth McLaughlin: " Romney to build on debate boost" An energized Mitt Romney is looking to build on his new campaign momentum in the country's swing states, including in Ohio, where he is deploying some of his heaviest political artillery and personalizing his message in his hunt for undecided voters. Capitalizing on his well-received debate performance, the Republican presidential nominee has dropped his busy fundraising schedule in favor of more traditional campaign stops. In fact, since his first faceoff with President Obama, Mr. Romney has held nearly a dozen events, including three stops in Florida and four in Virginia, compared with just one fundraiser. LINK

The Wall Street Journal's Colleen McCain Nelson and Patrick O'Connor: " Romney Targets Obama Voters" Mitt Romney is putting a new emphasis on visiting counties that voted for President Barack Obama in 2008, as he urges Republicans in swing states to help him push the president's supporters to switch sides. The change in tactics comes as last week's presidential debate, in which Mr. Romney was widely seen as besting the president, has boosted Mr. Romney's standing in both national and battleground-state polls. The Boston Globe's Jerry Markon: " Mitt Romney rips President Obama on Mideast" In a wide-ranging foreign policy address, Mitt Romney accused President Obama of a lack of forceful leadership in the Mideast on Monday, saying that a waning of American resolve in the region has made it a more dangerous place. "It is time to change course in the Middle East," Romney said, adding that he knows "the president hopes for a safer, freer, and a more prosperous Middle East allied with the United States. SWING STATES: Bloomberg's John McCormick: " Democrats Keep Voter Registration Lead in 4 Battleground States" Democrats hold the registration advantage over Republicans in four of six battleground states that will play a key role in the presidential election, even as Republicans and independents have recorded larger net gains since late 2008, data compiled by Bloomberg shows. Democrats have the edge over Republicans in Florida, Iowa, Nevada and North Carolina. In Colorado and New Hampshire, Republicans outnumber Democrats, according to the analysis of state data. LINK
