Florida mosque leaders called authorities on teen who talked of violence, jihad


Ah, if only every church would turn in lawbreakers in their midst.

It would appear one mosque did just that. One of it's members talked to others of committing acts of violence, ultimately he was turned in.

Not moved around. Not glossed over. Not ignored. But turned in.

Kudos to them for doing the right thing as opposed to ignoring a problem. I certainly hope this would serve as an inspiration to all religions that this sort of nonsense, the in house forgiveness, is the wrong route, and I certainly hope this would send a bit of notice to those who single out Islam as being inherently violent that there are plenty of decent, law abiding folks within Islam.

A 19-year-old accused of traveling to the Middle East to train with terrorists raised the suspicions of people at a Florida mosque when he started talking to other teens about violence.

Parvez Ahmed, the board secretary at the Islamic Center in Jacksonville, said Friday that Shelton Bell talked to other kids about jihad and the civil war in Syria. The other kids' parents became concerned.

Ahmed says mosque leaders consulted their attorney and then notified law enforcement because they were concerned about Bell's statements.

A federal grand jury indicted Bell, on charges of conspiring and attempting to provide material support to terrorists. He is being held at the county jail in Jacksonville on unrelated state charges.
